The KGSC / QUT Engineering Technology Program PDF Print E-mail

The program that we have developed with QUT allows students to simultaneously study the QUT ENB101 Engineering Mechanics I course (without accruing a HECS or HELP debt) and the EQ Engineering Technology course.

The QUT ENB101 Engineering Mechanics I course is a one Semester course when studied at QUT.

The EQ Engineering Technology course is a four Semester course when studied at any Queensland High School.

In this program students are required to attend four 70 minute lessons each week at KGSC (as opposed to the usual three 70 minute lessons) - studying the full EQ course over the two years and the full QUT course over the first three Semesters. Students attend several 2 hour QUT lectures, tutorials and Student Instructed Sessions over the 3 Semesters (all of year 11 and the first half of year 12). Both subjects will use a University level text – Statics & Mechanics of Materials 2nd Edition, Wiley and Sons 2002 (Which is again used at QUT in the ENB102 course).

The QUT course is assessed by QUT using their standard assessment instruments and conditions. Students will be awarded a standard QUT grade for the subject and both the subject and the grade will be recorded on their QCE. A successful result on this component of the course contributes towards automatic entry into QUT through the QUT start program. (In other words QUT will accept students irrespective of their OP if they can show success in two QUT subjects – this course can count as one of the two subjects.)

The EQ course will be assessed using some of the QUT instruments to assess some aspects of the syllabus, and using standard assessment instruments to assess the other aspects of content and Global Objectives.

Advantages

  • Students will gain credit for a QUT subject without
    • Giving up a school subject
    • Disrupting other subjects on a weekly basis for an entire Semester
    • Accruing a HECS / HELP debt – QUT covers the full cost with the Federal Government
  • Students will gain credit at the end of Semester 1,Year 12
    • Students could therefore have a lighter load in Semester 2
    • Students could chose to take up QUT Start in Semester 2
  • Students will not have to drop a subject at school (and thus potentially sacrifice their OP) to study a University accredited course
  • KGSC will use a University quality textbook
