How is the Middle School Organised?
Year 6, 7, 8 and 9 students only each class has a home room and is taught by two home room teachers for approximately 50% of the timetable

- learning tasks developed around these new basics are designed to:
- demonstrate intellectual quality
- develop life-long learning skills
- demonstrate relevance to the "real" world
- be socially supportive
- recognise difference
- engage and motivate students
- learning tasks culminate in the completion of a set of 8 Rich Tasks at the end of Year 9 (these develop knowledge and skills in preparation for Senior School studies).
- the timetable is organised into large blocks of time to allow for flexible use of learning time
- organised and presented in a transdisciplinary manner, which involves drawing on knowledge and skills across traditional subject areas
Classrooms
Refurbished in January 2002 to allow for more flexible, practical and effective use of space each dual teaching unit contains its own pod of computers to facilitate ready access and regular use of technology
New Basics Trial
Kelvin Grove is currently participating in Education Queensland’s trial New Basics Project. In 2001, three Year 8 classes participated. In 2002, New Basics extended to all Middle School classes in Years 6-9.

Why have a middle school? Kelvin Grove State College Middle School has been developed in response to the specific needs of young adolescents. Early adolescence is a distinct period in a child’s life which is characterised by rapid physical growth, exposure to a range of social pressures and changes in intellectual, emotional and moral development.
Our Middle School is committed to implementing programs, policies and practices to foster adolescents’ development and learning in a supportive and positive manner.
