Two of our Year 8 students Toson and Nicholas, accompanied by their teacher Michelle Limb had an incredible 3 days at the Mount Carlton mine located 150km south of Townsville.
The mining operation was developed by Evolution mining and commissioned in 2013. It is now a core asset and one of the highest-grade open pit gold mines in the world.
"Evolution mining has developed the expertise to commercialise a refractory, non-oxidised, high-sulphidation epithermal deposit which is a great example of thinking differently to unlock a previously uneconomic deposit."
This was an amazing opportunity for our students, which included sleeping on the mine site, witnessing a mine blast in an open pit and witnessing a gold pour. (The gold for the 2019 Melbourne Cup trophy was mined and processed here).
The experience allowed our students to get an understanding of, and career opportunities and pathways into the resources sector.
