Selection criteria and application process
Entrance to the Academic Achievers Program is via an entrance exam held at the College. Consideration is also given to previous academic information provided including achievement results, NAPLAN and participation in previous academic gifted and talented programs.
Years 7, 8 and 9
Kelvin Grove State College Middle School recognises the need to encourage students to ignite their sparks, become their best and be ready for their futures. In recognition of the diversity within our Middle School, Kelvin Grove State College offers the Academic Achievers (AA) Program in Year 7, 8 and 9. This Program offers extension and enrichment through the Australian Curriculum in the core subjects (Mathematics, Science, English, History and Geography) for academically gifted and talented students.
The annual fee for students participating in the Program is $100 fee in addition to the Student Resource Scheme fee.
What does this mean for classroom practice?
For students who participate in the Academic Achievers Program at Kelvin Grove State College, the curriculum is designed with careful consideration for level, pace and a degree of abstraction and complexity appropriate to the needs of high achieving learners who thrive on being extended. These curriculum provisions include:

an accelerated pace with fewer repetitions whilst still providing clear instruction and scaffolding

adjusted tasks to allow students to process more complex and abstract information and encourage higher order thinking skills

opportunities to engage in learning with students with similar academic goals and shared interests, with the aim of developing collaborative skills in problem-solving, critical and creative thinking, and self-reflection

encouragement to pursue independent inquiries that demonstrate innovative and rigorous responses that may involve extended outcomes.
Class organisation
Students in the Academic Achievers Program will follow the same timetable structure and have the same elective choices as their peers at KGSC. As with all students in Year 7, 8 and 9, students in AA will share the same class for Mathematics, Science, English, History and Geography. Student progress is still measured against the achievement standards of the Australian Curriculum.
