With a firm focus on the
acquisition and consolidation of literacy and numeracy skills, our Junior
School provides students with a solid start to their formal schooling. Best
practice Prep classrooms, in partnership with QUT, ensure that our students’
first year at Kelvin Grove State College will prepare them for future learning.
Our classroom teachers
remain current with pedagogical and curriculum development. Strategies for differentiation are embedded in
classroom practices and ensure that we support and develop the needs of all our
students.
Our specialist teachers
- Physical Education, Italian, Music, Library and Visual Art, have developed
unique programs for our Junior School students. Our Physical Education
curriculum has strong links with our College’s Excellence programs and includes
Golf, Soccer, Tennis and Dance. Music lessons take place in purpose built music
rooms with students as young as Year 1 composing and taking part in music
sessions. This runs alongside our Instrumental program for both strings and
percussion. Our Librarian supports our classroom teachers by enhancing literary
experiences in weekly lessons and beginning the College’s continuum in
referencing and editing skills. From Year 2, students participate in engaging
Italian lessons and enjoy school events such as Carnevale.
A full time English as
an Additional Language (EAL-D) teacher and a large and committed group of
teacher aides are supported by our College’s International/ EAL-D Department.
Working together they ensure our newly arrived students are able to access our
curriculum.
Ancillary staff are an
important part of our Junior School team. Teacher Aides and Learning Assistants
are trained to ensure that they are an important part of our classroom whilst
our administration team are our welcome to the school and are a wealth of
knowledge about enrolments and daily routines. Our facilities officer and
cleaners keep our rooms and grounds to a high standard that is always welcoming.
Our Junior School introduces
students to the College Values from Prep. Resilience, creative thinking,
integrity, respect, responsibility and diversity are all part of our daily
language. By enacting these key values, the intended result is the College’s
core value of ‘happiness’, where all
our community members feel valued and important. Our social skills programs which
encompasses Kidsmatter, lunchtime clubs and Prep Buddies with Year 5, further
embed these and ensures that we are catering for the social emotional learning needs
of all our students.
The Junior School,
whilst on its own campus and with its own facilities and grounds, has very
strong ties to our Middle and Senior Schools. As an Executive team we work
together to ensure that the transitions to the sub schools are seamless and
that all three sub schools are an important part of the P-12 Community.
A close relationship
with our community and families ensures that our Junior School gives each and
every student a wonderful start to their time at Kelvin Grove State College.
